Introductory Program

The TPaIDA Introductory Program is where all of our students get their first taste of life off the boat.  It is a a 7-9 day medical internship in Peru that takes place in Lima, Iquitos, and Cuzco.  Students will get a wide range of experiences from staying in an eco lodge on the Amazon river and meeting native peoples, to visiting the top of Machu Picchu, to assisting in surgeries and doing rounds in hospitals all over Peru!   You’ll get to meet new people and see how they live while learning what is is like to be a medical professional on the front lines of providing care.  Everyone who has gone has had their worldview broadened in ways they did not anticipate.

TPaiDA Introduction Program: The Clinical Pathology and Science of Infectious Tropical Diseases Medical Internship:

Course Description:

Our Introduction program is a once in a lifetime experience to learn about Clinical Pathology and Infectious Tropical Diseases in a hands on environment. You will be given the opportunity to work with and shadow doctors in hospital wards, theaters, field clinics as well as hearing from their experiences in lectures and roundtable discussions.

You will be based in Iquitos, a jungle city in the North East of Peru where access is only possible by plane and boat, you will be working in the biggest hospital there and students will be introduced to the basic biology of viruses, bacteria, protozoa, fungi, and parasites and the diseases they cause in humans.

This course is designed for undergraduate students in the Biological Sciences, pre-medical, medical, and students in the health professions. Professionals interested in first-hand experience with tropical diseases are also encouraged to participate. This is a short, one week, highly intensive course designed to maximize didactic and practical learning. There are small class sizes and it consists of 5 clinical days in local hospitals and a two-day/one-night trip on the Amazon River to conduct a medical clinic that caters to the needs of smaller villages lacking in medical treatment.

The course is designed to give students an awareness of worldwide healthcare needs and provide a practical educational experience. Learning strategies include; lecture, hands-on laboratory work, roundtable discussions, clinical case conferences, and field study.

 

Application for Medical Internship/ Study Abroad

To apply for the medical internship and study abroad through the Tropical Pathology and Infectious Disease Association (IPTEI), please fill out the application/questionnaire attached. Please include a mandatory $75.00 processing fee with your application.

Tuition is $2,975, which includes all, course materials, breakfasts, lunch, hotel accommodation in Iquitos and a 2 day and 1-night jungle/river medical/clinic.

Please note that the tuition fee does not include international or domestic flight; each student is responsible for this cost of his or her flight. We are happy to recommend a travel agency who can book your domestic flights for an additional cost if needed.

Please note that 20% of the tuition is due upon the receipt of your acceptance. Advanced Program

This is 14-18 day Peruvian course is for graduates of the Introductory Program.  You’ll expand on the medical knowledge you’ve gained from your studies and the Introductory program. This program includes more lab work and specialized training than the Introductory program as well as the opportunity to mentor younger TPaIDA students.

TPaiDA Advanced Program: The Clinical Pathology and Science of Infectious Tropical Diseases Medical Internship

Course Description:

Immerse yourself like never before in the medical world of Peru. You will have hands on experience in the labs, theaters and hospitals wards as well as work side by side some of the leading doctors in Peru.

The Advance program is an Introduction into Molecular Medicine in the Diagnosis of Infectious Diseases. This is a 5 day Short course in using Molecular Biology in the diagnosis of Infectious Diseases. This is a very intensive course with Didactic and Clinical Molecular Biology. The first two days in Lima are hands on training in Rt-PCR, PCR, NAT in HIV, HBV, HCV, and CMV in diagnosis the infectious disease in real patients. Second day is based on principles in understanding of blood work and profiles in infectious diseases. The 3rd, 4th is in Cusco with more hands on training in Molecular biology, Biochemistry, Hematology, Microbiology and Infectious diseases in Cancer patients. The fifth day is a visit to Machu Picchu, wonder of the world. We will then fly to Iquitos, the jungle city in the North East of Peru. We will work in the hospital as well as holding a field clinic deep in the Amazon jungle that caters to the needs of smaller villages lacking in medical treatment.

Master Virology Program

The Master Virology program takes place in Hamburg Germany at the Heinrich Pette Institute. It is a 9 day highly condensed course in virology from the institute that created the Polio vaccine!  The world class staff at the Heinrich Pette Institute will assist Dr. Rolling in imparting a wealth of knowledge in a short amount of time.  However, all work and no play makes for dull people.  On the weekends there will be opportunities to visit German castles and sample the exquisite cuisine.

The Master Pathogenic Virology Course, Hienrich Pette Institution, Hamburg Germany

The Master Pathogenic Virology Course will be taking place in the famous Hienrich Pette Institute, Hamburg. The Institute is renowned for its new approaches in research for improved diagnostic techniques and therapies for viral diseases and virus-associated tumor diseases. Not only is it famed for the development of the polio vaccine but recently they have proved the possibility to excise the DNA of the HIV from the genome of individual cells to remove it. This demonstration is an important step in the development of a cure for AIDS.

This course is designed for graduates, undergraduate students in the Biological Sciences, pre-medical, medical, and students in the health professions. Professionals interested in first-hand experience with Pathogenic Virus diseases are also encouraged to participate. This is a short, one week, highly intensive course designed to maximize didactic and practical learning. The course is designed to give students an awareness of worldwide Pathogenic Viral Diseases and provide a practical educational experience in understanding the Role of Pathogenic Virus worldwide.

Students will be introduced to the Molecular Virology, Viral Biochemistry, Pathogenic Virology, Viral Pathophysiology, Lab Rotation, Animal Models and BSL Biosafety Level (BSL)

Learning strategies include; lecture, hands-on laboratory work, roundtable discussions, clinical case conferences, and field study.
